Rat Anti-Mouse Interleukin-2 (IL-2) ELISA Set

BACKGROUND
Interleukin 2 (IL-2) is a small 15kD α-helical protein that is primarily secreted by activated T cells and natural killer cells[1]. This extensively studied cytokine signals through a receptor complex consisting of the IL-2 receptor alpha and beta chains, and a common gamma chain[2]. Binding of IL-2 to its receptor can initiate a variety of signaling pathways including MAPK, Jak/Stat and PI-3K/Akt. Antigen binding to T cells stimulates IL-2 and IL-2 receptor up-regulation leading to clonal expansion and differentiation of T cells[3-5]. Moreover, IL-2 is necessary for regulatory T cell maturation in the thymus and may also sensitize antigen-activated T cells to apoptosis [1,6].

The importance of IL-2 in supporting the immune response makes this cytokine and its receptor a prime target for both activation and suppression. Its growth factor properties facilitate studies that require generation of large numbers of T cells, while inhibition of this cytokine is critical for immune suppression, including transplant patients and individuals with autoimmune diseases [1,7,8].
